The special team of the city’s Shipra Path police station arrested Rajesh Meena alias Rahul, a native of Dausa district, and recovered three cars and a bike from him. One of his aides is currently on the run. During searches at his hideouts, the police recovered electronic chips, transmitters and other high-tech equipment used to hack the security systems of high-end cars.
The initial investigation indicated that Meena and his gang used to conduct a recce on bikes to identify potential vehicles. The accused admitted to having stolen over 100 vehicles in the past 16 months, including 60 cars from different parts of New Delhi and 40 from Jaipur.
DCP (south) Vikas Pathak said that a special team had been set up under the supervision of additional DCP Manoj Choudhary and ACP (Mansarovar) Deepak Kumar Sharma after a sudden increase in vehicle lifting cases was reported in the last few months. “We had some information about the gang. So, we set up a special unit to track down the culprits,” Pathak said.
Accused sold most cars in UP
Additional DCP Manoj Choudhary said that Meena admitted to having sold the stolen vehicles to a car dealer in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh. “Most of the vehicles stolen from Delhi were sold in Uttar Pradesh, while vehicles lifted from Jaipur city were disposed in Pali, Jalore, Jodhpur and Ajmer in Rajasthan and some parts of Haryana,” Choudhary said.
Senior policemen said that they have recovered a bag from Meena’s house in which they found two master keys, 23 magnet chips, two keys, remote and seven mobile phones. “The accused primarily targeted sedans and SUVs. He has been using electronic devises to hack into security systems. We are trying to figure out his modus operandi,” said ACP (Mansarovar) Deepak Kumar Sharma.
According to Sharma, the accused spent the money on buying an expensive house at a leading residential colony in Jaipur and made a down payment to buy an SUV on instalment. “Meena also bought jewellery. Efforts are on to arrest his accomplices,” said SHO Surendra Yadav.
Police said two constables from Shipra Path police station—Umesh Sharma and Abhay—had first learnt about Meena’s activities which led to the arrest.
