*The National Green Tribunal on Tuesday took the governments of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to task, asking them to explain why preventive steps were not taken to control the air quality in the region

*The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has informed the Supreme Court-mandated Environment Pollution – Prevention and Control Authority (EPCA) that smoke-laden air from Punjab and Haryana, and moisture-heavy winds from the eastern region, had combined with local pollutants to trigger the situation

-Delhi and the neighbouring states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana strengthen the public transport system by introducing more buses

-A fine of Rs 50,000 be imposed on road construction agencies violating dust pollution norms in Delhi-NCR

-Brick kilns, hot mix plants and stone crushers be closed across the region till further notice

*The green body also said the national capital was facing a “crisis situation”, which is likely to persist for the next few days

*The EPCA has instructed the governments of the affected states to start preparing for measures like odd-even and a construction ban, if the pollution aggravates

*Hours after the Indian Medical Association declared a public health emergency in New Delhi, the government in the capital issued health advisories for high-risk groups, including children and the elderly, asking them to avoid outdoor activities

*The Delhi government has also declared a holiday for all primary school students on Wednesday, and has said it will extend the order till Thursday if required

*The CISF has distributed 8,000 masks to its personnel tasked with Metro security, 5,000 to those in Airport security, and around 1,000 to the rest

*In what could come as more bad news, the CPCB does not expect “a dramatic change in the next two-three days”
