NEW DELHI: On the occasion of Constitution Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi waded into the controversy over judicial activism and said the government and judiciary must set their differences aside and work towards serving the people.
The Prime Minister said that at this juncture, India’s constitutional bodies are faced with a crucial question: “As members of the same family, are we working together to strengthen one another, in support of each other?”
He said that every decision taken by the country’s judiciary, legislature and the executive arm affects millions of people and all institutions need to work in tandem for the welfare of the populace.
“Unfortunately we have not been able to remove our internal weaknesses, so many years after independence. We need to think about it at all levels,” he said at the valedictory function of Constitution Day celebrations here.
Relating a parable on the difference between heaven and hell, PM Modi said that those who work to serve their own interests can never make the nation prosper, adding that cooperation and empowering one another is the way of good governance.
“जिन्होंने दूसरों को strengthen करने का रास्ता अपनाया वहां स्वर्ग था और जिन्होंने अपनों को strengthen करने की कोशिश की वहां नर्क फैला हुआ था,” he concluded.
PM Modi went on to hail the Constitution of India, saying it has stood the test of time as a comprehensive tome which enshrines guidelines and instructions on every conceivable subject.
“Our constitution has passed every litmus test over the years. People who raised doubts about the Indian constitution’s efficacy in dealing with challenges have been proved wrong,” he said.
Invoking the father of the Indian Constitution, Dr B R Ambedkar, PM Modi pointed out: “Baba Saheb said that Constitution is workable, flexible and has the power to unite the nation in times of war and peace. He also said if a wrong is done, it will not be the fault of constitution but the institution which is making people abide by constitution.”
PM Modi said that both the judiciary and the executive need to work together to achieve the vision of New India by 2022.
“India is a young nation. To strengthen it, all the constitutional bodies will have to come together and work towards it,” he said.
The National Law Day, better known as Constitution Day or Samvidhan Divas, is observed on November 26. On this day, the Constituent Assembly agreed on the final draft of the constitution in 1949.
