AHMEDABAD: A day before the deadline for filing the nomination papers for the first phase of Gujarat assembly polls ends, the BJP declared its third list of candidates with 27 names. With this, all 89 BJP nominations for the first phase of Gujarat polls stands complete.
The party has axed water resources minister Nanu Vanani, panchayat and rural development minister Jayanti Kavadia, agriculture minister Vallabh Vaghasiya.
Earlier in the day, there was speculation that former chief minister Anandiben Patel’s daughter Anar may be fielded from Navsari. However, in the evening, BJP confirmed that the seat remains with sitting party MLA Piyush Desai.
Women have a got a raw deal this time with just nine candidates among the 135 BJP candidates declared so far. Of these, OBCs and Patidars have 41 and 34 seats respectively.
Former industries minister and Akota MLA Saurabh Patel will contest from his parent assembly seat, Botad, while speaker Ramanalal Vora will now contest from Dasada seat in Surendranagar district instead of Idar constituency. The party has offered Lalit Sagathiya the Rajkot rural seat. He had lost from the same seat in 2012 assembly elections.
In all, BJP has declared names of 135 candidates since November 17 of which 89 will contest in phase-1 of Gujarat assembly elections. The party hasn’t fielded a single Muslim candidate so far.
Under its ubiquitous “no repeat theory” to battle anti-incumbency, the BJP dropped 14 sitting MLAs including former women and child minister and Jamnagar (South) MLA, Vasuben Trivedi, and former irrigation minister and sitting Udhna MLA, Narottam Patel.
In place of Trivedi, the BJP has given its mandate to former Gujarat BJP president R C Faldu, while on Patel’s seat, the party has brought in a fresh face, Vivek Patel. The BJP has allotted tickets to 12 Kshatriyas till now, and fielded 25 ST and 7 SC candidates for this election.
