NEW DELHI: Haryana Police on Thursday assured theatre owners that they will receive protection to ensure the film ‘Padmaavat’ is screened peacefully.
“We want to assure movie-goers and cinema owners that they will get protection from the government and Haryana Police. There will be no laxity,” said DGP BS Sandhu.
Reserve forces have also been deployed at malls and multiplexes to prevent untoward incidents.
“All theatres have been provided with adequate protection. Things are peaceful now. If someone is involved in unlawful activities, they will be arrested immediately and strict action will be taken,” he added.
31 people had been arrested from all over the state, either for their involvement in the violent protests against ‘Padmaavat’ that marred Haryana, or as preventive measures. Of these, 18 were involved in torching a Haryana Roadways bus and attacking a school bus carrying 30 students.
Last night, the Multiplex Association of India announced that its members would not screen the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-helmed film in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa. The association represents around 75 per cent of India’s multiplex owners, and accounts for for 1,800-2,000 screens across the country.
Several fringe groups, including the Rajput Karni Sena, have been opposed to ‘Padmaavat’, indulging in rampant arson and violence a day before the film’s release. They accuse the makers of distorting history and insulting Rajput pride.
