NEW DELHI: Stepping up the attack on the ruling Congress in poll-bound Himachal Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the party had become synonymous with corruption and the people will punish it for looting the state.
“Congress and corruption, they’re one and the same thing. Nobody can separate the two from one another. Corruption is the only identity of the Congress party,” PM Modi said at a Parivartan rally in Kullu on Sunday.
“All their leaders are out on bail after facing serious charges of corruption and they are speaking about putting a check on corruption,” he jibed.
Campaigning for the third day in a row in the state that goes to the polls on November 9, the Prime Minister said the people of the hill state would teach the Congress a lesson by bringing down its “Sultanate”.
“This time one can see a storm in Himachal. The anger of the public is coming out against corruption, bad law and order, for protection of women and daughters. People want not just change, but punishment for those who looted Himachal Pradesh,” he said.
Launching yet another salvo at the Congress for spearheading the Opposition’s plan to observe November 8, the anniversary of demonetisation, as ‘Black Day’, PM Modi alleged that the party was still seething after its illegitimate wealth got wiped out due to the note ban.
“The Congress is planning to observe ‘mourning’ in the coming week. It has nothing to do except grieve in the coming days. I do not fear burning of my effigies. My fight against corruption will not stop,” he said at a rally in Palampur earlier in the day.
The prime minister claimed that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had refused to carry out note ban after a panel headed by Yashwantrao Chavan recommended it, accusing her of keeping her party’s interests over that of the nation.
“Had she done note ban when needed, I would not have had to carry out this big task. For the Congress, it is never ‘dal se bada desh’ (country bigger than party). For them only their party’s interest comes first,” he said.
Reiterating his assertion that the BJP will win three-fourth majority in the upcoming election, PM Modi said the Congress has already conceded defeat and “run away from the battlefield.”
“Never has there been a one-sided election as seen in this election. The reason for this is that the country knows what the Congress government is like and what its intentions are,” he said at a rally in Una.
The Prime Minister vowed that the “double engine” of a BJP government in the state and centre will ensure rapid development for Himachal Pradesh.
“On November 9, the people of Himachal will vote for change. I will repay the people’s debt to me with interest and I will do so through development,” he declared.
