NEW DELHI: It was a heart-warming moment today in the Philippines when Prime Minister Narendra Modi took time out from his busy ASEAN summit engagements to meet with a nine-year-old boy.

The boy, Carlo Migel Silvano, is from the Bulacan province of the Philippines, and is one of thousands of Filipinos fitted with the famous ‘Jaipur Foot’, a rubber-based prosthetic leg for people with below-knee amputations.

In a photograph, Carlo is seen showing a concerned PM Modi how his Jaipur Foot is helping him be mobile. The meeting between Modi and the 9-year-old boy took place at the Mahaveer Philippine Foundation Inc. (MPFI) in Manila.

Carlo told the PM he wants to be a policeman. The PM tweeted about the encounter.

The PM said his his visit to the Mahaveer Foundation in Manila had been wonderful.

The maker of the Jaipur Foot – developed over 40 years ago- is the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti in India, which is also said to be the world’s largest limb fitting society.

Prior to his departure for the Philippines, PM Modi said his visit to the Mahaveer Foundation would demonstrate India’s support for its activities in distributing free prosthesis Jaipur Foot among needy amputees, reported IANS.

“Since its establishment in 1989, MPFI has fitted nearly 15,000 amputees in the Philippines with Jaipur Foot making them capable of living a new life,” said Modi, adding that the Indian government was making “a modest contribution” to the foundation to support its noble humanitarian activities.
