NEW DELHI: The snag-prone Pratt & Whitney (PW) engine of an IndiGo Airbus A-320 Neo developed yet another fault after taking off from Delhi on Sunday. The flight to Ranchi with 190 people onboard had to return to Delhi’s IGI Airport after the pilots shut down the engine which had developed the snag and landed back safely on one engine.

Confirming this, an IndiGo spokesperson said: “VT-ITE Neo aircraft operating 6E-509 (Delhi-Ranchi) had an air turn back to Delhi. The crew carried out an engine inflight shut down following the standard industry procedure. The aircraft landed back safely at Delhi with 183 passengers and 7 crew on board. The matter is under investigation and has been reported to the regulator.”

This is at least the second snag in PW engines of the A-320 new engine option (Neo) aircraft of IndiGo. On Saturday, the budget carrier’s Kolkata-Port Blair flight with 174 passengers had to reject take off in Kolkata following an engine snag. The aircraft was also a Neo (VT-ITH).

Some A-320 Neos powered by PW engines were grounded earlier this year following safety directives from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). These planes were allowed to fly only after a particular snag-prone series of PW engines was replaced on them.

With Neo PW engine troubles recurring, a word from DGCA is awaited for what action the regulator takes now.
