Narine, who became the first overseas spinner to take 100 IPL wickets on Monday, took three wickets for 18 runs in three overs, while Yadav finished with figures of three for 32 in 3.2 overs. Piyush Chawla, Andre Russell, Shivam Mavi and Tom Curran also took a wicket each. Chasing 201-run target, Daredevils had a disastrous start as they lost three wickets in first three overs. A sharp glove-work from Dinesh Karthik saw in-form Jason Roy out stumped off Chawla in the first over. In the second over, Nitish Rana took a good catch at slip to dismiss Shreyas Iyer off Andre Russell. And in the third, young pacer Mavi castled Gautam Gambhir to reduce Daredevils to 24/3 in three overs.
Pant and Maxwell revived the Daredevils run chase as they kept the scoreborrd ticking and added 62 runs for the fourth wicket.
Pant was looking good for half-century, but he hit straight into the hands of Chawla at deep mid-wicket off Yadav in the ninth over. Pant scored 26-ball 43 which included a six and seven fours. Pant’s wicket triggered a batting collapse for Daredevils as they lost next six wickets in 5.5 overs for 43 runs.
Sent in to bat, KKR stepped on the gas with Russell carnage in the middle as they overcame a slow start to post a challenging 200/9 against DD. Rana anchored the innings with a breezy 59, but it was Russell’s show in the middle overs, which lifted the hosts to 200 after being put in by Gambhir at the Eden Gardens.
Russell occupied the crease briefly, for 12 balls, but hit all over the park en route to a brutal 41 — 36 off them coming in sixes. That the Jamaican did not have a single four in his whirlwind innings, summed up his dominance, before being deceived by Trent Boult’s inswinging yorker that unsettled his leg-stump.
The only blip in Russell’s innings was when he was dropped on 7 by Roy off the bowling of Mohammed Shami, but from thereon there was no stopping the Jamaican. Russell missed out on a fifty, but Rana brought up his in 30 balls in a highly impressive knock, which contained five fours and four sixes. Rana hold the KKR innings together before being done in by a slower one by Chris Morris.
After the departure of Russell and Rana, wrist spinner Rahul Tewatia (3/18) took three wickets in the last over, but the duo’s stunning 61-run partnership from 22 balls was enough to help KKR post a challenging total.
Boult gave Daredevils a terrific start, bowling a maiden first over to Chris Lynn, and then accounting for Sunil Narine. But KKR still managed to score 50 runs in the Powerplay, thanks to some clean hitting by Lynn (31) and Uthappa, who scored a brisk 35 from 19 balls. Lynn got into the groove by smashing Boult for back-to-back boundaries before Uthappa took Nadeem to the cleaners with two sixes and a four.
