NEW DELHI: BJP’s Chief Ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa on Tuesday urged governor Vajubhai Vala to let his party prove majority support in the Karnataka assembly as it is the single largest party.

“We met Governor because we are single largest party, and that he allows us to prove majority in the Assembly,” said Yeddyurappa.

The BJP leader, along with party leader Ananth Kumar, had met the governor at his residence in Bengaluru after results from the assembly elections delivered a split verdict.

Earlier today, with the BJP emerging as the single largest party but falling short of a majority, the Congress sprang a surprise, declaring it will back the also-ran JD(S) in forming the government.

Shortly after BJP’s meeting, Congress and JD(S) leaders, too, held a meeting with the governor staking a claim to form the government in the state.

“JD(S) and Congress have enough numbers to form the government. BJP cannot form the government without the numbers,” said Congress leader M Veerappa Moily.

Following Congress’s announcement, JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy wrote to the governor seeking an appointment to meet him.

The JD(S) has already announced that Kumaraswamy would be the party’s candidate for the Karnataka Chief Minister’s post.

“This is to submit to your good self that I have accepted the support extended by the Indian National Congress to form the government,” Kumaraswamy said.
