NEW DELHI: In a fierce broadside against Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today slammed the Congress leader for contesting the state assembly polls from two seats. Paying back the PM in his own coin, Siddaramaiah asked Modi why he had contested the 2014 general elections from two constituencies.

Speaking at a poll rally in Karnataka’s Santhemarahalli, the Prime Minister targeted Congress party’s dynasticism and said: “I was reading the papers and saw a 2+1 formula in Karnataka. This is a version of family politics in Karnataka. This is the innovation of the CM of Karnataka. With the fear of defeat he went in search of another seat. And, in his old seat he has sent his son.”

The PM was mocking the Congress heavyweight’s decision to run for the May 12 election from Badami in Bagalkot district as well as from Chamundeshwari constituency in Mysuru. Siddaramaiah has fielded his son Yathindra from Varuna, a seat which the Congress has consistently won in all elections since 2008.

Tweeting minutes later, Siddaramaiah was quick to call out Modi’s own track record during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, when he filed nomination papers from Vadodara in Gujarat and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

“Was it fear that drove you to contest from 2 parliamentary constituencies (Varanasi and Vadodara) Mr PM Narendra Modi? Of course you are a 56 inch man, you would have some clever explanation! Forget 2 seats, Sir. Worry about the fact that your party will not cross 60-70!,” the CM jibed.

The Karnataka CM further charged that PM Modi had a “2+1” formulation of his own, which comprises the two graft-accused Reddy brothers and chief minister candidate B S Yeddyurappa.

“Today PM avoided talking about his complicity in closing CBI cases against the Reddy brothers. Instead he spoke about some 2+1 formula. Here is the explanation to his formula to win election. 2 Reddys + 1 Yeddy… I don’t know about me but you have a 2+1 formula PM Sir,” Siddaramaiah said in a couple of tweets.

The Congress and the BJP are bracing for a fiery showdown in Karnataka in the run-up to the assembly election on May 12. PM Modi is set to address as many as 20 rallies in order to bolster the saffron party’s chances of ousting the Congress and returning to power in the southern state. The ruling party is also putting up a fierce fight to retain its hold on Karnataka, one of its four remaining bastions in the country.
