GHAZIABAD/MEERUT: A Meerut crime branch constable, Tehzeeb Khan, received bullet injuries after a National Investigative Agency (NIA) team, probing the murder of RSS worker Ravinder Gosain in Ludhiana on October 17 this year, came under attack from local residents at Ghaziabad’s Nahali village on Sunday morning. The NIA team along with sleuths from UP ATS had raided residence of an alleged arms dealer in the village on Sunday for his involvement in the RSS worker’s killing.
“A case was registered under sections of attempt to murder and rioting against seven named and 50 other unidentified men, following which police arrested a man named Nazim. Hunt is on to nab others involved in the incident,” Akash Tomar, Ghaziabad superintendent of police (city), said.
According to UP DGP’s office, a joint team of NIA and UP Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) conducted raids at several locations in Meerut on the intervening night of November 2-3 to trace arms dealers who had allegedly supplied weapons to assailants in the Punjab RSS worker’s murder.
The team picked up a few suspects who gave them information about prime suspect Malook, a resident of Nahali village under Bhojpur police station in Ghaziabad. The team, with the help of ATS and Meerut crime branch, raided Malook’s residence on Sunday morning but met with stiff resistance from local residents who pelted stones and opened fire at the investigating team.
“During the raid, a large crowd of men and women tried to obstruct the local police and the NIA team. Some people in the mob started firing at the raiding party. The firing was followed by stone-pelting. The mob also caused multiple roadblocks to obstruct the officials in discharge of their duties,” NIA said in a statement.
“Malook was born and brought up in this village. He is aggressive by nature and often gets into fights with locals. We came to know around 7 am that a police team that had arrived here to arrest Malook was attacked. Upon being nabbed, Malook and his family members panicked and called out for help when a group of women reached for help. These women reportedly pelted stones at police vehicles. Malook jumped out of a police vehicle and escaped in the melee,” village pradhan (headman) Rahees Ahmed told TOI.
“Cops returned and raided the house three times during the course of the day on Sunday,” a neighbour said.
UP ATS inspector general Asim Arun said, “Constable Tahzeeb Khan was injured in the attack at Bhojpur area of Ghaziabad. Posted in Meerut, Tahzeeb was accompanying NIA team. ATS personnel also came under the attack. A vehicle was vandalised and damaged by the mob.”
Constable Tehzeeb Khan, part of the Meerut crime branch’s special operation group (SOG), was injured and rushed to a hospital in Meerut. Several other investigators received minor injuries.
A heavy police force has been deployed at the spot following the incident.
“Efforts are on to trace Malook. Two suspects are currently being questioned regarding their alleged involvement in the case,” NIA said in a statement.
On November 30, the NIA had registered the case to probe the killing of Gosain under various sections of the IPC and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Gosain, the ‘Mukhya Shikshak’ of the Mohan shakha of the RSS, was shot dead outside his residence in Ludhiana’s Gagandeep Colony in the morning of October 17 by two unidentified assailants riding a motorbike.
The case was transferred to NIA on November 20 last month after a delegation of RSS leaders had met Punjab chief minister Captain Amrinder Singh and sought a probe by the premier agency.
