PATNA: At least 15 passengers were feared dead after a bus travelling from Muzaffarpur to New Delhi, turned turtle and caught fire on NH-28 near Belwa village under Kotwa police station area of Motihari in East Champaran district of Bihar at around 3pm on Thursday.

Officials fear that the figure might go up.

Kotwa police station SHO Vijay Sinha, when asked, told TOI that only four persons could be rescued from the ill-fated bus.

The bus caught fire soon after the accident.

“They all were injured and were rushed to sadar hospital for treatment. They also have received burn injuries,” the SHO said.

The SHO, quoting villagers and some eye witnesses, said that the bus was of a private operator and the accident took place while the driver attempted to save a two-wheeler.

“The bus went off the road and turned turtle. Before anyone could react and people could gather to rescue the trapped passengers, the bus busted into flames which engulfed it immediately barring people to go nearby for rescue work,” the SHO said.

He said police are yet find out the exact number of passengers in the bus at the time of the accident.

The ongoing rescue work at the accident site has been hampered due to heavy rains in the area.

They said that senior officials had rushed to the sadar hospital to take an stock of the situation and look after the victim. The East Champaran police were also in touch with the counterpart in Muzaffarpur.
