LUCKNOW: At least 16 people were killed and close to a 100 injured after a blast in a boiler pipe at NTPC’s Unchahar power plant in UP’s Raebareli on Wednesday. Many labourers are still feared trapped around the blast site.
The NTPC has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
According to reports, hundreds of NTPC workers, including senior officials and engineers, were working at unit number 6 of a 500MW power unit when the boiler pipe exploded. The unit was installed recently by the NTPC and was functioning normally till now.
Government sources said that most of the injured workers have suffered over 70 per cent burns and feared that the death toll may rise further.
NTPC confirmed that some of its senior officials, including three assistant general managers, were severely injured and have been rushed to Lucknow for treatment.

UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath, who is in Mauritius for an investment summit, announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the workers who died in the accident.
Principal secretary home, Arvind Kumar, and senior officials of the police department have already rushed to the site. Kumar said that a 32-member fully-equipped contingent of National Disaster Management Relief (NDRF) force has been sent for rescue operations.
The medical department has been directed to send as many ambulances as possible to the spot. Lucknow-based King George’s Medical University has also been put on alert.
