BENGALURU: A day after Congress veteran P Chidambaram pitched for greater autonomy for Jammu & Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tore into him, saying his remarks were an “insult to our brave soldiers who have laid down their lives for Kashmir”.
Even as a red-faced Congress sought to distance itself from Chidambaram’s comments, Modi, addressing a rally of party workers here on Sunday, said, “Congress besharmi ke saath uss bhasha ka prayog kar rahi hai jo Kashmir ki dharti pe algav-vadi karte hain, jo Pakistan mein bola jata hai (Congress is shamelessly speaking the language of separatists in Kashmir, and which is spoken in Pakistan).”
At Rajkot on Saturday, Chidambaram had pitched for greater autonomy for J&K, saying his interactions with people there had led him to conclude that an overwhelming majority of Kashmiris want autonomy.
While Congress said these were Chidambaram’s personal views, Modi slammed the party, saying, “Why are Congress leaders lending their voices to those who want azaadi in Kashmir? Can these people, who base their politics on the ultimate sacrifice of our soldiers, ever contribute to the country’s welfare? And now I understand why they (Congress) did not support our surgical strikes.”
Modi said after Congress’s numerous electoral defeats, he was hoping that its top leaders would help bring the party back on track. “But there is no hope left as they (Congress) continue to behave irresponsibly. Can the nation really benefit from such people who are intent on playing politics with the nation’s brave? Congress will have to answer. We won’t allow any compromise on the country’s unity,” he said.
The PM also made a jibe at Congress over its stand on the 10-week Doklam stand-off this year. “Do you remember the lies Congress was spreading on Doklam? No matter how powerful China was, India’s perseverance and persistence saw it through and today the country holds special respect among other countries in the world,” he said.
