NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has questioned a former deputy governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Harun Rashid Khan in the multi-crore scam unearthed at a Mumbai branch of the state-run Punjab National Bank (PNB), news agency ANI reported.

The investigative agency on Thursday had questioned four senior Reserve Bank officers at its Mumbai office.

Without divulging their names, CBI sources said two RBI officers of the rank of chief general manager and one of general manager rank, were summoned to Mumbai office of the agency and questioned for several hours.

The RBI officials, called for questioning for the first time in the scam, were grilled about the lapses in the statutory audit of the central regulator due to which Rs 13,500 crore PNB fraud remained undetected for a long time as the SWIFT messaging system was misused.

The officers were also asked about 20:80 gold import scheme introduced by then finance minister P Chidambaram on May 13, 2014, barely three days before the counting of votes of 2014 general election.
