GURUGRAM: Already under fire for allegedly botching up the probe into Ryan International School student Pradhyumn Thakur’s murder, Gurgaon police officials who carried out that investigation are facing bigger scrutiny.
Days after “questioning” them, the CBI has started looking at call records and bank details of members of Gurgaon police’s special investigation team (SIT) that arrested school
bus conductor Ashok Kumar+
, now out on bail, for the murder. The agency has
detained a Class 11 student of the same school+
for the murder and, according to an official, the “lapses” in the police investigation were too glaring to just be seen as sloppy work.
Sources said members of the SIT would soon be served notices barring them from going on leave or leaving the city. “The way Ashok was picked up and made to confess, planting of the murder weapon on him, negligence in review of CCTV footage, and call records of witnesses — all these clearly indicate glaring lapses,” said a CBI official, who did not wish to be named. “We’re trying to ascertain the reasons behind the botched-up probe.”
Sources also said the CBI had been corroborating what SIT members had told them about their line of investigation.
During its 10-day-long investigation, the SIT had claimed it had carried out a systematic inquiry that included repeated reviews of CCTV footage and interrogation of over 100 people. Yet, the Ryan student who is now the prime accused was deemed a key witness by the SIT.
Gurgaon police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar, who had all along defended the police probe, said on Friday, “If action is required to be taken, it will be taken in an apt way and at an apt time.”
Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar has also said the state government “is neither quiet nor ignoring the lapses, but investigating the role of Gurgaon police”.
Despite repeated attempts, a sub-inspector who played the main role in arresting the Ryan bus conductor refused to comment.
Kumar, a school bus conductor with Ryan’s Bhondsi campus, was arrested on September 8, the same day as the murder. The police theory was that Kumar had tried to sexually assault the boy and killed him when he resisted. Kumar had also confessed before news reporters outside the local court premises, which he now claims he did because the cops tortured him in custody.
The case turned on its head on November 8 when the CBI announced it had a new suspect, the Class 11 student, and that there was no evidence to implicate Kumar. The CBI has said the senior student wanted an exam and parent-teacher meeting postponed and for that, he wanted to create a flutter. That is how he came to target little Pradhyumn outside the school’s ground floor washroom on the morning of September 8. Pradhyumn was found with his throat slit just outside the washroom. He died later in hospital the same morning.
