NEW DELHI: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi took a dig on Sunday at critics questioning the sudden surge in his popularity on Twitter with a sarcastic tweet “confessing” that his pet dog was behind the posts. He also put out a video of the pet.
“People (have) been asking who tweets for this guy… I’m coming clean, it’s me… Pidi. I’m way cooler than him. Look what I can do with a tweet… oops… treat!” Rahul tweeted.

The post immediately attracted considerable comment and saw former Congress functionary and now BJP minister in Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma responding that he recognised the pet that Rahul kept feeding when Sarma sought to discuss political issues before the assembly polls in 2016.
“Sir who knows him better than me. Still remember you busy feeding biscuits to him while we wanted to discuss urgent Assam’s issues (sic),” Sarma said in a tweet. Sarma’s allegation set off another round of bickering.

In the video, Rahul can be heard encouraging his pet Pidi to do namaste, at which it stands up on its haunches. Placing a dog treat on Pidi’s muzzle, he instructs the dog to stay. Then, at the snap of his fingers, the treat disappears with a skilful twitch of its head and Rahul exclaims, “good boy”.
Rahul’s tweet was aimed at his detractors who claim that his recent witticisms on Twitter were not his own but managed by a dedicated team of social media experts.
In the recent past, tweets posted by the Congress V-P have often grabbed headlines. Rahul has been in the news for a sudden rise in his retweets and number of followers. His Twitter handle, @OfficeOfRG, got more than one million new followers between July and September this year.
It was also reported that many of his followers joined Twitter in October and had not posted a single tweet. However, some media reports also claimed that the surge in the number of followers and retweets of Rahul’s Twitter handle was artificially generated by bots with Russian, Kazakh or Indonesian characteristics as they were routinely retweeting the Congress V-P’s tweets. This has been denied by Congress’s social media cell.
In one of his more popular tweets, Rahul retweeted on October 15 US President Donald Trump’s tweet endorsing improving ties with Pakistan with his own tweet, “Modiji quick, looks like President Trump needs another hug.”
Recent tweets by @OfficeofRG have gained traction on social media with posts that mocked GST as “Gabbar Singh Tax”, or turning weatherman to predict “jumlon ki baarish (rain of rhetoric)” ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to poll-bound Gujarat.
Rahul also mocked finance minister Arun Jaitley’s claim on the economy with a rhyme in colloquial Hindi, holding that the economy was in the ICU and “Dr Jaitley’s” medicines were ineffective. “Dr Jaitley, the economy is in the ICU because of note ban and GST,” he tweeted.
He also tweeted a doggerel, “Aap kehtey hai aap kisi se kum nahi/magar aapki dava mein dum nahi (You claim you are no less than others, but your medicines have no strength).”
