GURUGRAM: The Class XI Ryan International School student who was arrested by the CBI in connection with the murder of seven-year-old Pradhyumn Thakur of the same school was no stranger to the boy. Both attended piano classes in the Bhondsi school.
That familiarity seems to have proved lethal for the child. During counselling on Saturday, the accused told members of the juvenile justice board that after reaching the school on September 8, he left his bag in the classroom and returned to the ground floor with a knife he had bought from a shop in Sohna market, sources familiar with developments told TOI.
Being familiar with the victim, he easily convinced Pradhyumn to accompany him to the washroom on the pretext of seeking a favour, and slit his throat. The juvenile said that after the first slash, Pradhyumn vomited blood and fell on the knife, receiving a second, deeper cut. The juvenile’s clothes did not get blood-stained as Pradhyumn’s bag, which he had on his back, acted as a shield.
Having killed Pradhyumn, the juvenile left the knife in the washroom and ran out to call the gardener and teachers, according to his statement to members of the juvenile justice board. The accused also reportedly confessed that he had exam-phobia and wanted to postpone the exams at any cost.
Pradhyumn’s family confirmed that he had been attending piano classes in school for the past two years.
After three days of police remand, the CBI produced the juvenile before Judicial Magistrate First Class Devender Singh on Saturday. As the agency did not seek further extension of custody, the court sent the juvenile to the Faridabad observation home till November 22.
The CBI, in its report sub-mitted before the court (TOI has a copy), mentioned that the juvenile has admitted to his involvement in Pradhyumn’s murder in the washroom.
“The juvenile claimed the atmosphere at his home was not good due to frequent fights between his parents and that’s why he lost interest in studies,” said a source. The source said the district child protection unit will now meet parents, neighbours and friends of the juvenile accused to prepare a social investigation report, which is likely to play an important role in the case.
