NEW DELHI: Karnataka Congress chief minister Siddaramaiah today said Prime Minister Narendra Modi doesn’t have a leg to stand on in attacking his government for “rampant corruption”, considering his chief ministerial choice for the upcoming state polls was once a convicted felon.
Siddaramaiah was referring to BS Yeddyurappa, who was arrested and jailed for allegedly denotifying land in and around Bangalore illegally, for monetary gains. He was acquitted in 2016.
“Appoint an untainted person as your CM candidate” tweeted Siddaramaiah today, challenging the PM to “walk the talk” on the issue of corruption.
At a rally in Karnataka on Sunday, PM Modi had accused the state’s Congress government of placing the party’s interests ahead of the people’s.
“Corruption and misgovernance are rampant. Every section of society, including farmers, youth, neo-middle class and the middle class are unhappy,” said Modi in election mode in the poll-bound state.
Siddaramaiah today tweeted that he was “glad the PM is talking about corruption” but he then he invited him to take action on three corruption-related issues in addition to changing his choice for chief minister of Karnataka.
“Appoint Lok Pal”, said the Karnataka CM, who has in the past, too, said a Lokayukta was not appointed for nine years in Gujarat when the PM was CM, “because of the fear that their illegal help to industrialists would come out”, reported PTI.
Siddaramaiah also wants the PM to investigate judge BS Loya’s death. Loya was the sitting judge overseeing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case in which BJP president Amit Shah was one of the accused people. Judge Loya died before the case concluded, some say in mysterious circumstances. Shah was later acquitted by the judge who took over from Loya.
The last corruption-related action, Siddaramaiah wants the PM to take is to investigate “the astronomical rise of Jay Shah”, the son of the BJP president. The allegation is that Shah used his position as a senior member of the ruling party to have undue favours granted to his son to make him allegedly a lot wealthier than he was, before the BJP government was elected at the Centre in 2014.
