NEW DELHI: With Union home ministry expressing serious concern over the audacious escape of jailed Lashkar terrorist Naveed Jhat alias Abu Hanzullah from SMHS Hospital in Srinagar, the Jammu & Kashmir government has begun to move hardened terrorists from Srinagar Central Jail to other jails of the state.
Sources said seven terrorists have already been relocated to other jails, while cases of other terrorists in custody are being reviewed and more shifts are likely.
To ensure tighter vigilance against terrorist prisoners, the state government has decided to involve CRPF in all aspects of Central Jail security.
The enquiry by Divisional Commissioner, Srinagar into Naveed’s escape will seek to fix responsibility for lapses if any, and also examine why the hardened terrorist was taken to the out-patient department (OPD) rather than directly to doctors deputed to examine them in the hospital itself. The report is expected in the next 15 days.
A handcuffed Naveed, who was being taken out of the jail for a medical checkup at the SMHS hospital, was freed by his gun-toting, pheran-clad accomplices. The assailants shot two policemen accompanying Naveed, resulting in their death, even as Naveed escaped on a motorcycle waiting outside.
Following the incident, the MHA had expressed serious concerns, citing the gravity of the incident. The ministry strongly advised the state government to look into the gaps in jail administration and thoroughly review security measures.
Alarmed at the development and appreciating the concerns of the home ministry, the state government has initiated several measures to correct the situation and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
DG Prisons, J&K has been transferred. The jail superintendent at Srinagar Central Jail has been suspended and replaced by Mukesh Kumar Kakkar, presently additional SP, Anantnag.
