NEW DELHI: The Madras High Court (HC) today asked the Tamil Nadu government to explain by June 6 the circumstances that led to police firing into a crowd in Thoothukudi in the state last month.

On May 22, police opened fire on protesters agitating against the expansion of the Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi, Tuticorin, killing 13 people, including two women. The protestors were demanding the closure of Sterlite Copper plant over pollution concerns.

A day after the incident, the National Human Rights Commission took cognizance of the matter and issued a notice to
Tamil Naduchief secretary and police chief asking them to send a detailed report in the matter within two weeks.

As well, the Tamil Nadu government issued orders closing the copper smelter plant in Thoothukudi owned by the Vedanta Group.

According to a Bombay Stock Exchange filing, the company said that it has received an “order dated May 28, 2018, from the Government of Tamil Nadu directing the
Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to seal the company’s ‘
