NEW DELHI: At least three people were killed and several wounded after a gunman opened fire inside a high school in New Mexico, US on Thursday.

San Juan County Sheriff Ken Christesen told reporters that three people believed to be students died on Thursday at Aztec High School.

Aztec police chief Mike Heal confirmed that the suspect was down, without clarifying if “down” meant injured, dead or in police custody.

So far, no information has been forthcoming about the shooter’s identity, whether he was a student or an outsider.

Authorities said the school building was evacuated and the students were escorted to a safe location.

Aztec High School is in the Four Corners region and is near the Navajo Nation, an expansive native American territory.
