NEW DELHI: Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Monday said that the response of the United Kingdom’s government to Vijay Mallya’s extradition was “positive,” ANI has reported.
“We made our position clear. The response is positive from the government’s side but there can’t be a detailed discussion as the matter is in court,” ANI quoted Rijiju as saying, after his meeting with UK immigration minister Brandon Lewis.
Mallya was on October 4 arrested by police in London in connection with a money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) , and was released on bail by a London court soon after.
The beleaguered liquor baron had told news agency PTI that he had “done nothing wrong” and had described the allegations against him as “fabricated”.
During the ministers’ meeting, Rijiju raised 13 cases of extradition, including those of Mallya, Lalit Modi and bookie Sanjiv Chawla.
“We raised many issues about Indians in UK, extradition and mutual legal assistance treaty. We raised 13 extradition cases and 16 under mutual legal assistance treaty. The response was positive,” he said.
Rijiju also brought to Lewis’ notice the alleged anti-India activities being carried out by Sikh extremists and Kashmiri separatists based in the UK.
Lewis described the meeting as “really good.”
“We had a really good meeting, and are going to continue the positive conversation between our governments,” he said.
